Description
9 and 10 Henrietta Villas are a pair of semi-detached houses built around 1840, with some alterations made in the 20th century. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a shallow pitched hipped slate roof with wide eaves and a double moulded stack on the party wall. The houses are three storeys high with semi-basements, each having a one-window range.
The exterior includes rusticated pilasters at the quoins and party wall, with moulded eared architraves around the windows. The windows are two-over-two pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars, and the ground floor features tripartite windows. There are returned sill bands with projecting sills on the upper floors, and cornices on the lower floors, with the ground floor cornices supported by fluted consoles. The rear sections of the houses are slightly wider, featuring coped parapets and cornices above enclosed porches that have six-panel doors and overlights.
No. 9, on the left, has a double depth two-storey porch with a window on the first floor, plate glass sash windows, and a canopy over a 20th-century six-panel door. No. 10 has a single-storey porch with a panelled parapet and a four-panel door with a margin paned overlight.
The area where these houses stand was originally intended for a larger development called Frances Square, as indicated on plans from 1793 and 1810. However, after delays, a reduced suburban development was carried out in a typical Late Georgian style. The villas are depicted on Cotterell’s 1851 plan of Bath and were noted as "newly erected" in the Bath Guide of 1853. Additionally, No. 10 underwent alterations by WJ Willcox in 1895, as documented in the Crozier-Cole collection.
