Description
The former mortuary chapel, built around 1820 by architect John Pinch, is a ruined structure located on the south side of Bathwick Street. It was constructed using limestone ashlar from the old church that was demolished in 1818. The chapel features a three-bay plan with a north-west tower.
The tower is three stages high and has off-set angle buttresses. It includes an ogee-arched dripmould over a two-light opening, with four pierced quatrefoils in each light of the bell openings at the third stage. The second stage has a shallow pointed arch and dripmould above a two-light window, along with a similar arch above a former door. The nave is marked by thin off-set recessed buttresses, and a three-light window on the south-east side features intersecting tracery, a dripmould, and an oval plaque to the left. The chapel currently has no roof.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is said to include the chancel arch from the old church, while the font has been moved to St Mary's. Notably, John Pinch, the architect of this chapel, is buried nearby on its south side.
