Description

Nos 16 to 18 on Southgate are a range of small houses built between the 18th century and early 19th century. Each house has three storeys and is located immediately north of Nos 13-15, with a higher frontage. The first-floor windows are roughly aligned with those of No 13-15. The houses feature a tiled hipped roof with three hipped gables that have modillions. The construction includes sandstone rubble with brick quoins and brick dressings. Each house has one window bay, with square heads on the second-floor windows and segmental heads with rubbed brick voussoirs on the first-floor windows. The first floor at the northern end retains sash windows with intact glazing bars. There are 20th-century shop fronts for numbers 17 and 18, while No 16 has a 19th-century shop front. Nos 13 to 18 together form a group.
