Description
No 24 on Southgate is a timber-framed building with an 18th-century front. It has two storeys and an attic, topped by a steeply pitched red tiled gabled roof with a truncated stack at the northern end. The attic storey is a modern addition. The exterior features painted brick with a band above the ground floor and two window bays. The sash windows have flush boxes and square heads, with intact glazing bars. There is a large square window on the ground floor with small square panes; although modern, it is set in a fluted frame that matches the door frame. The doorway also has a fluted frame and an entablature with a flat hood above. The central north-south wall of the house exposes panels of square timber-framing with plaster infilling on both the ground and first floors. Inside, large beams are exposed in places in the ceilings, and there is an original staircase made of pine wood featuring turned balusters, pendant newel posts, and a closed string.
