Description
No. 44 South Street is an early 19th-century building featuring a hipped slate roof, two storeys, and a basement. The façade has three window bays and is constructed from flint with galletted flints, accented by painted brick quoins and dressings. A brick dentilled cornice runs below the eaves. The sash windows, which retain all their glazing bars, are set in reveals with shallow segmental arches. On the first floor, there is a large three-light bow window supported by a stone arch on corbels, creating a canopy over the doorway below. The entrance is accessed by steps shaped like a mounting block, with a railing separating them from the pavement. The doorway features a semi-circular fluted frame with an impost moulding and a six-panel moulded door set in reveals, topped by a semi-circular fanlight. Nos. 43 to 45 and 47 South Street form a group with this building.
