Description

38 South Street is a pair of early 19th century houses, built with number 37A. The buildings are three storeys high, with two windows on each floor. A central red slate roof features a hipped shape and a red brick stack. A cornice runs along the roofline. The walls are stuccoed, with the ground floor rusticated. The first and second floor windows are set in reveals with flat arches, retaining their original glazing bars and being sash windows. Iron balconies are positioned in front of the first-floor windows. Each house has a fine bow window on the ground floor, comprising three lights, each containing a sash window. Flights of six steps with iron handrails lead to semi-circular arched doorways at either end; the doors are panelled, with six fielded panels, the top two cut away and glazed, and are accessed via semi-circular fanlights.
