Description

Nos 9 and 11 on London Road are a pair of Tudorbethan cottages built around 1870, attributed to architect J A Hansom. These split-level cottages are one storey with an attic and have a basement visible on the southwest and northwest elevations. The cottages feature brick walls with stone dressings, stone coping, and kneelers at the gables, topped with a tile roof that has alternating bands of plain and shaped tiles. They also have tall brick chimney stacks with moulded capping.

The northeast or front elevation includes a tall central chimney stack and two three-light mullioned attic windows. There is a gable in the centre with a two-light mullioned window on the first floor to the right. On the ground floor, there are two rectangular bay windows with hipped roofs, featuring transoms and mullions, with four-light windows in the front and single lights in the side walls. The centre also has two small mullioned windows.

Each side elevation has two gables. The south gable on each side features a three-light window on both floors, with transoms on the ground and first floors. The centre bay of each side has a slightly recessed first-floor window above a lean-to with a gabled porch supported by stone piers and a bargeboard. The doorway has stone jambs and a ledged door with elaborate hinges. The gabled north bay on each side has a jettied first floor supported by stone piers, although one stone pier in the north bay of the south elevation has been replaced by a brick pier.
