Description
The greenhouses at Arundel Castle are a Grade II listed structure, first depicted in a drawing from 1854 by the firm of Jones and Clark, later known as Henry Hope Ltd. These lean-to greenhouses feature a stock brick rear wall and a front plinth made of Flemish bond with stone coping. The frames are wrought iron, and the panes are glass. The building is 28 bays long and divided into two sections. The front displays cambered arches, which are mostly buried under the soil, likely intended for planting vines outside, and has a sloping roof with alternate bays that can be opened. Most of the original glazing remains intact. Each side and the center of the structure have Gothick arched openings, with the center and left side retaining a half-glazed door. Inside, there are ventilation bricks and an elaborate system of pulleys and brackets designed for training vines. The northern range was originally wired for vines, while the southern range was wired for peaches.
