Description

St Mary's Hall, built in the late 19th century, is a former Roman Catholic school designed by possibly J A Hansom. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a pitched tile roof. It has elaborate grouped red brick chimney stacks with significant cornicing. The hall is one storey high, with a basement on the south side, and has a coved eaves cornice. At either end of the north elevation, there are two gabled projections. Above the central door, there is an octagonal tower. The south elevation includes six buttresses, with the two in the center supporting an oriel window. At the southwest corner, there is an aedicule framing a statue. The windows are mullion and transom style, featuring diagonal lead glazing bars. The wall to Mount Pleasant has two piers made of Pulborough stone, topped with gabled caps.
