Description

St Mary's Junior School, now a Social Services centre, was built between 1855 and 1860. It features red brick with blue brick bands and sandstone dressings, topped by a steeply-pitched fishscale slate roof. The building has a hall and a crosswing plan, with a one-storey hall and a two-storey wing at the south end, both at the same height.

The hall includes buttresses with offsets and two tall gabled 6-light transomed windows that break the eaves. These windows have cusped lights and 2-centred arched relieving arches with arch-bands of blue brick. A gabled porch is located at the angle with the wing, featuring a 2-centred arched doorway with a chamfered surround, hoodmould, and double doors with strap hinges. There is also a 20th-century flat-roofed addition to the left of the porch.

The gable of the wing has two windows with two cusped lights each at the ground floor, and a large 2-centred arched 3-light window at the first floor with circular tracery in the head. The north gable wall of the hall is dominated by a very large 2-centred arched transomed 14-light window with plate tracery. The rear of the building is similar to the front but features a projecting gabled porch now surrounded by 20th-century additions that enclose the rear of the wing.

The school forms a group with the Church of St Mary on Upper Moss Lane, St Mary's Rectory on Parsonage Street, and the Moss Side People's Centre on St Mary's Street.
