Description
Bluecoat School, now St Mary's Church Hall, was built around 1720. It is constructed of rubble without dressings and features a steep stone slate roof. The original building is a simple two-storey block with seven windows that have wood lintels. The windows are two lights with a transom, set flush with the wall, and have chamfered and stooled cills. The gable is plain and includes a recent double-leaf fire door with a rectangular fanlight above it. There is a brick extension at the rear of the building. The wall to the playground at the back has two upper-level windows: one is a one-light window and the other is a two-light window, both with transoms and one horizontal glazing bar. There is a lean-to access passage at ground level. The wide door has a V-jointed narrow plank face with two raised and fielded moulded panels on the inner side, along with the original lock and fittings, including bold L-shaped strap hinges. An elliptical shell hood on scrolled brackets, made of painted wood, is a modern replacement.
