Description
The Court is a large detached house that was once a rectory, built in the early 18th century. It features rendered rubble construction, a stone parapet cornice, and a stone slate roof. The main front has a tripartite design with a wide classical pediment and a deep projecting portico supported by pilasters. The principal block has a hipped roof with a central flat section, while a narrower block extends to the left. There are four brick stacks with moulded stone cappings.
The building is two storeys plus dormers, with a five, three, five window arrangement. All windows are sashes with glazing bars set in wide surrounds and stone bull-nosed cills. The central section has a Venetian window on the first floor, flanked by two sashes on the ground floor beside a six-panel door with a decorative fanlight. The dormers have hipped roofs and two-light casements with rectangular leaded glazing.
A four-columned Doric porch with responds and a flat entablature enhances the entrance. Inside, there is a notable 19th-century staircase and staircase hall, with panelled doors in deep reveals, a modillion cornice, and classical details, some of which have been replaced but remain in keeping. An arched opening with fluted pilasters is located to the left. There are also panelled and painted rooms, including one to the right of the entrance hall and a study in the back right.
The building has undergone at least two major campaigns of work, primarily around 1727, with extensions and alterations, including the main portico, occurring around 1830. It is situated on glebe land and was known as the Old Rectory until its name was changed.
