Description

Nos. 4 and 6 Withington Road are a pair of villas dating from the mid-19th century, with alterations made since their original construction. No. 6 is now a dentist’s surgery. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick and have slate roofs. They are arranged on a double-depth plan, with No. 4 single-fronted to the right and No. 6 double-fronted, with later rear extensions. The architectural style is Italianate.

The villas are two storeys high with cellars and attics, featuring five windows (arranged 3+2). They display symmetry, with a gabled central section projecting forward. Key features include a plinth, vermiculated quoins, a first-floor sill band, a string course to a frieze of raised panels, and paired brackets supporting the projecting eaves. Round-headed doorways are situated on either side of the central projection, with three steps leading up to the entrances. These doorways are flanked by fluted Corinthian pilasters, and the doors themselves have two round-headed glazed panels, semicircular fanlights, and bracketed cornices. Canted bay windows are positioned to the left and right, while the remaining windows have moulded, shouldered architraves. The ground-floor windows are sash windows without glazing bars; those on the first floor are sash windows with four panes. Round-headed attic windows are set within pilastered surrounds. Ridge and end-wall chimneys are present.

The rear of the property showcases a large wing extension to No. 6, and a back extension to No. 4 containing a round-headed stair window with coloured margin panes. The buildings combine with Nos. 12 and 14 (which are matching) and Nos. 8 and 10 to form a notable architectural grouping.
