Description

The Church of St Margaret is a church built between 1848 and 1849 by architect J. Harrison. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and features a red tile roof with a cockscomb ridge, showcasing a Decorated style of architecture. The church consists of a nave with north and south aisles, a north porch, a west steeple, a chancel with a north vestry, and a south chapel.

The three-stage tower has a plinth with moulded gritstone coping and angle-buttresses. Its west doorway is arched with a moulded surround and hoodmould that includes carved stops. Above the doorway is a two-light traceried west window with trefoil lights and a hoodmould. The second stage features a lancet window, while the belfry windows are louvred and shorter than those below. The tower culminates in a broach spire adorned with large two-light lucarnes at the base, which have louvres and crocketed gablets, along with smaller lucarnes on two levels above and a weathervane.

The five-bay nave includes two-light clerestory windows with cusped traceried heads. The north aisle is supported by buttresses and features segmental-pointed windows with three trefoil lights, along with a gabled porch on the second bay that has diagonal buttresses, a moulded two-centred arched doorway with a hoodmould, and a coped gable topped with an apex cross. The south aisle has similar windows to the north aisle but with mouchette tracery, and a two-centred arched doorway with figured stops on the hoodmould. The chancel and chapel are highlighted by three-light east windows with elaborate mouchette tracery, while the chapel also contains two-light windows featuring mouchette tracery. The interior has not been inspected.
