Description

Nos. 12 and 14 on Withington Road are a pair of mid-19th century villas that have been altered. They are constructed of stucco on brick with a slate roof. The buildings have a double-depth plan, with No. 12 on the right being double-fronted and No. 14 single-fronted, both featuring shallow back extensions. Designed in the Italianate style, they are two storeys high with cellars and attics, and have a symmetrical façade with five windows arranged in a 2+3 configuration. The central gabled section projects slightly forward and is complemented by a plinth, vermiculated quoins, a first-floor sill-band, and a string-course with raised panels, supported by paired brackets at the projecting eaves.

Each villa has round-headed doorways on either side of the central section, accessed by three steps. These doorways are flanked by fluted Corinthian pilasters and feature doors with two round-headed glazed panels, semi-circular fanlights, and bracketed cornices. The left and right sides have canted bay windows, while the remaining windows are fitted with moulded shouldered architraves. All windows are sashed, with the ground floor windows lacking glazing bars and the first-floor windows being four-paned. There is a round-headed attic window with a pilastered surround, along with a ridge chimney and end-wall chimneys. This pair of villas forms a group with Nos. 4 and 6, which match them, and Nos. 8 and 10.
