Description

Nos. 2 and 3 Wedgwood Villas are an unequal pair of villas built in the 1850s to 1860s, likely designed by George Wightwick. They are constructed of stucco and feature bitumen-grouted slate and asbestos slate roofs with decorative modillion eaves cornices and projecting verges. The villas exhibit an Italianate style and have an articulated double-depth plan.

The exterior consists of two storeys plus an attic over a basement, with a symmetrical front that has five bays, arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern. There is a single-storey porch set back on the right that leads to a three-storey axial wing, with a later lean-to built above the porch. The central bays feature a segmental pediment over a narrower central bay that is slightly advanced. The ground floor porch has channelled rustication and a coved round-arched doorway with a keyblock. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes set in openings with moulded architraves, and there are hoods on consoles above the first-floor windows, along with pediments over the tripartite windows of the projecting cross wings. The ground floor also has round-arched windows with keyblocks and pilasters. The open porch has a round arch with a keyblock at the front and two round arches on the right-hand return. A mid-floor moulded string on the main front becomes a cornice for the former balustrade above.

The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest. These villas are included for their group value as part of a well-preserved L-shaped layout of particularly lavish mid-19th-century villas with intricate Italianate stucco detailing.
