Description
Nos. 6, 8 (College House) and 10 Ford Park are a pair of villas built in the mid-19th century, around the 1850s to 1860s, likely designed by George Wightwick. They are now part of Plymouth College. The buildings are constructed of stucco with dry Delabole slate roofs, which are hidden behind a stuccoed balustraded parapet that projects over a modillion cornice. Each end features a stuccoed partly external stack with triple square shafts and moulded cornices, showcasing an Italianate style and an articulated double-depth plan.
The exterior consists of two storeys over a basement plus an attic, with a three-bay front and single-storey porches set back on the left and right. The central bay rises to three storeys and is topped with an open pediment that has a central acroterion, flanked by segmental mini pediments over panelled pilasters. The second floor features a round-arched window with recessed architraves above a square-headed window that has a moulded hood on brackets. This is complemented by a balustraded balcony over a cornice leading to a canted bay window with pilasters. The flanking bays also have recessed architraves and panelled end pilasters, with all windows being late 19th-century horned sashes. The porches are adorned with a moulded entablature on flat roofs and round-arched doorways that have recessed architraves and moulded impost strings, leading to panelled doors.
While the interior has not been inspected, it is expected to be of interest. These villas are part of a well-preserved L-shaped layout of particularly lavish mid-19th-century villas, noted for their intricate Italianate stucco details.
