Description
The Headmaster's House is a pair of villas built around the 1850s to 1860s, likely designed by George Wightwick. They are part of Plymouth College and feature stucco exteriors with channelled rustication at the plinth, and roofs made of asbestos slate. The central roof is behind a stuccoed balustraded parapet with modillioned cornices, while the flanking roofs have pedimented front gables topped with central acroteria. The buildings display an Italianate style and have an articulated double-depth plan.
The exterior consists of two storeys with flanking three-storey cross wings that project forward, and two-storey porches that are set back on either side. The left-hand porch has been heightened to three storeys. The symmetrical front has a 1:2:3:2:1 bay arrangement. Each pediment features a round central panel and triangular flanking panels above giant panelled pilasters set on vermiculated rusticated pilasters, with moulded cornices at the ground floor. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes within moulded architraves, with round arches on the second floor, eared architraves on the first floor, and hoods on consoles at the ground floor. The recessed central bays include tripartite windows at the ground floor and a central mid-floor niche with a moulded hood and sill supported by brackets. The porches have keyed ordered round arches and panelled pilasters, along with plain glazed fanlights and 20th-century doors.
While the interior has not been inspected, it is expected to be of interest. The building is part of a well-preserved L-shaped layout of particularly lavish mid-19th century villas that showcase intricate Italianate stucco detailing.
