Description

28 and 29 St Mark's Road are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1860. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, with No. 28 featuring a concrete tile roof and No. 29 having a slate roof. The villas are designed as a compact block with gables facing the street and small attached porches on the sides. Due to the sloping site, there is a full-height extra floor developed at the rear.

The buildings are two storeys high, with an attic and a lower ground floor. They have a central pair of sash windows on the ground and first floors, each with moulded cornices supported by console brackets above. There is a single window within the gable on the second floor. All windows are plain plate glass sashes set over sills with brackets. Continuous platbands run around the first and second floor levels. The small porches are set back and have hipped roofs, featuring panelled doors with plain fanlights in moulded archivolts with keys and plain impost bands. No. 29 has a small dormer above, while the main returns have a small dormer above the first-floor sash. The rear includes a single light in the gable above paired sashes and a tripartite sash on the ground and lower ground floors. The gables and eaves have deep soffits, and there are two large square ashlar stacks in the central valley. The front wall features arcaded openwork masonry with arch-headed gate-piers that have incised ornament.

The interiors have not been inspected. These villas are identical to the adjoining 30 and 31 St Mark's Road and are part of a development that overlooks the railway station, consisting of Italianate villas on a steeply sloping site.
