Description

2 Lyncombe Hill is a detached house that dates from the late 18th century and mid 19th century, with some 20th-century additions. The building is constructed of limestone rubble and has slate roofs. The earlier part of the house features a broad mansard roof with high gabled ends and a lateral stack, while the lower, later wing consists of two gabled units that meet at a central valley.

The house is two storeys tall with an attic and has plain sash windows. The earlier range has a single window above two closely spaced sashes, and to the left, there are two blocked lights above various lean-to and other additions. There is a large stack on the right side, made of rubble and raised in ashlar, which was originally external. The north end of the earlier range features a wide canted bay with plain sashes, an entablature, and a small attic light. The coped gables have a slight break in the roof line, resembling a quasi-mansard form, with a ridge covered in stone tiles.

The lower wing has two widely spaced plain sashes in flush surrounds on each level facing Calton Road. On the double-gabled return, there are two sashes with straight cavetto drips above a small canted bay with a flat roof and a 20th-century door, which is partly under the flat roof of a large garage extension. At both ends, at the eaves level, there are Corinthian capitals built in a corbel fashion. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the taller range is reputed to have been a mill building and is also known as "Pope's Villa."
