Description
Nos. 19 and 21 are a pair of terrace houses built in the early 19th century, constructed from fine limestone ashlar with slate roofs. The buildings rise three storeys, with an attic and basement, and each features three windows. All windows are sashes, with six-pane dormers in the mansard roofs, six-pane sashes on the second floor, and twelve-pane sashes with margin panes on the lower floors. The first-floor windows are set within shallow sunk arched panels on a broad platband, while the basements have sixteen-pane sashes. No. 19 has a barred opening in a dwarf wall at the pavement edge. Each house has an entrance centered in an arch with a keystone and deep reveals, leading up a set of stone steps to a panelled door with a radial swagged fanlight. Simple railings are present on either side, enclosing the stone curb to the basement areas. The buildings feature a cornice, blocking course, and parapet. The right-hand end of No. 21 has a short return at an obtuse angle, connecting to No. 3 Southcot Place. This return includes a flat full-height bow with bowed sashes, six above twelve-pane, and a dormer, while the basement has a flat-roofed extension. At the rear, there is a large square ashlar stack and a sash dormer above a small six-pane sash. The interiors have not been inspected. No. 19 was recorded by the Bath Preservation Trust in 1992. This end house is part of a short stepped terrace and the bow is an important feature in the townscape, prominently visible to those descending Lyncombe Hill and serving as an introduction to the terraces of Southcot Place.
