Description

St Mary's Gate is a medieval structure that was rebuilt in the early or mid-19th century. Historical images from 1780 and a print from 1792 show it before the rebuilding, with the side bays intact but the arch collapsed. This former town gate became redundant after the diversion of London Road. The building is constructed from dressed and knapped flint, with Pulborough stone dressings. It stands three storeys tall and features a stringcourse at the eaves level and a crenellated parapet. The gate has three bays, with the central bay flanked by buttresses that support a machicolated second storey. The flanking bays contain rectangular windows with roll-moulded surrounds on the ground and first floors, while the second floor has pointed lancets with roll-moulding surrounds. The central bay features one four-centred arch with chamfered and moulded embrasures on the ground and first storeys, along with three slit openings on the second storey.
