Description

The Adult Education Centre, formerly known as Farnham Grammar School, is located at 25 West Street and dates back to 1872, with parts rebuilt around 1895 based on a design by Paxton Watson. This two-storey building features four bays, with the end bays projecting forward and having gabled attic storeys. The front is constructed of yellow brick and includes stone string courses, a projecting plinth, and stone quoins and dressings. The roof is red tiled.

The windows are transomed and mullioned, with a small lancet window in the left end bay and a small two-light casement window in the right end bay of the gabled attic storeys. The first floor of the left end bay has a four-light window, each light with a pointed head and a dripstone above. Below this, there is a three-light window and a square-headed stone doorway on the ground floor, along with a single-light window. The third bay features a four-light window on both the first and ground floors, while the right end bay has a four-light window above and a five-light window below. A wrought iron lamp bracket is located below a quadrangular light. An inscription reading "1611. Schola Grammaticalis. 1872" is found on a band below the windows.

This building is part of a group that includes several other listed buildings on the southeast side of West Street, from Nos 18 to 46.
