Description
Number 26, occupied by Maxwell Aylwin FRIBA, is an 18th-century building that was refaced around 1840. It is two stories tall and constructed with Roman cement. The building features a projecting plinth and horizontal rustication on the ground floor, along with a moulded string course at the first floor level. There is a projecting frieze and a moulded cornice with a blocking course. The roof is covered with old tiles and has curved angles at the front.
On the first floor, there are three windows set within stucco surrounds that include an architrave. The ground floor has a frieze and a modern door on the left-hand side, which is framed by a plain surround with scroll brackets and blocks that support the cornice head.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos 18, 37, 43, 45, and all the listed buildings on the south-east side from Nos 19 to 46, including the wrought iron screen in front of Vernon House.
