WEST STREET (South East Side) Nos 23 and 24

GV II*

Dated 1790 on rainwater head. 2 storey, attic and cellar. Fine red brick on projecting plinth. Painted string at 1st floor level. Fluted frieze with roundel ornament, delicate moulded cornice. Brick parapet with stone coping. Old tile roof. The 2 houses have been designed together and are joined by a slightly recessed bay with arched passage entrance and panel over. No 24 has 3 dormers, small sashes. 5 windows on 1st floor and 4 on ground floor all with stone cills. 6-panels central door, scroll brass knocker, arched radiating and wreathed fanlight with cast enrichment in panelled reveals and doorcase fluted and 1/3rd reeded Ionic pilasters, broken entablature with roundel in frieze, dentilled cornice, and open dentilled pediment. 2 moulded stone steps. 4 cellar lights. Foot scraper. No. 23 repeats design including door and surround, and has 3-bay front with door at right hand. 2 dormers.

Nos 18, 37, 43 , 45 and all the listed buildings on the south-east side from Nos 19 to 46 (consec) (including wrought iron screen before Vernon House). Form a group.
