Description
Little Sandrock Cottage and Rose Cottage are a pair of cottages that likely date from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. They are constructed from local Weald stone, featuring brick dressings, quoins, and a dentil eaves cornice. The cottages have a plain tile hipped roof with a central brick stack. At the rear, there is a lower parallel range made of matching stone, which was probably raised in the 19th century, with a red brick first floor and a plain tile roof. Both cottages are two storeys high, with Little Sandrock Cottage having a cellar that opens to Courts Mount Road. The front elevations each have two window bays and a central doorway, with inner three-light and outer two-light windows that have renewed leaded lights. The ground floor openings are segmentally headed.
Inside, the ground floor rooms feature chamfered beams, and Rose Cottage has a beam with a stop as well. Each cottage has a ground floor inglenook fireplace surround with a timber bressumer and a side purlin roof with strutted queen post roof. The doors are ledged and have smiths' hinges.
Deeds for Little Sandrock Cottage include an indenture from 1605 that mentions "a little house or tenement (one of two) ..... upon a hill called Shepherd's Hill near Haslemere."
