Description

This is a substantial early 17th-century house of two storeys and four windows, situated on Lower Street. The roof is tiled and half-hipped. The walls are of galleted coursed sandstone, featuring a high, sloped plinth. The windows are stone-mullioned with leaded glass and dripmoulds, arranged as one-, three- and four-light openings. A four-centred arch defines the doorway. The rear section is timber-framed, constructed to a high quality with roll mouldings. Three gables are visible, with windows providing light to a top-floor workshop formerly used by fur traders. The building was formerly known as Skinners and reflects the wealth generated by the 17th-century fur trade.
