Description
Penfold's is a substantial house dating from around 1600, with 19th-century additions. The original building has two storeys and an attic, featuring three main bays with a passage bay between the second and third bays. The ground floor displays straight square framing made of fairly thick scantling, with painted brick filling, while the upper part is tile hung. The house has a high pitched tiled roof with a moulded wood eaves cornice and two old chimneys located at the rear. The 19th-century additions include leaded casement windows. Inside, there is a side-purlin roof supported by wind braces, with very heavy timbers and later added struts and collars. Significant late 19th-century extensions were made by J.W. Penfold, which include ornamental glass featuring patterns of foliage and delicately painted birds, as well as good fireplaces and woodwork in this section.
