Description

Broad Dene is a substantial house built in 1900 by W.F. Unsworth, designed to evoke the solidity and enclosure of a mediaeval building. The house is two storeys high and comprises a wide two-bay central section, a projecting cross-gabled right wing with a pent extension forming a porch, and a projecting two-bay left wing with an idiosyncratic round tower in the angle, topped with a swept conical roof and spike. A flight of steps leads to an elaborate iron-framed door, set against a stone outer wall. The ground floor is built of snecked freestone, while the first floor is tiled and has a pronounced bellcast above the coving. The windows are small, leaded casements with up to five lights, set in oak frames. The steep tiled roof features swept eaves, a deep soffit, and a tall central chimney in a 17th-century style with rebated angles. A blank one-storey extension is attached to the left wing.
