Description
Castle Hill House is an 18th-century building with older foundations, featuring two storeys, an attic, and a basement. It is constructed of red brick and has string courses above the first and second floor windows. The building has a plain parapet with stone coping and a hipped roof covered in old tiles, along with one dormer added in the 19th century.
On the first floor, there are five windows, while the ground floor has four windows and a tall six-panel central door set in a stone surround. This door is framed by architrave pilasters and carved scroll brackets, with a curved frieze above that supports a cornice, which is broken forward over the brackets and features a segmental pediment. Access to the doorway is via five moulded stone steps leading up from a small terrace, with an additional lower flight of seven plain stone steps from the drive to the terrace. To the right, there are two basement windows with small spearhead guard rails on the terrace. The upper flight of steps is bordered by plain thin barred early 19th-century rails. There is also a later late 19th-century gabled extension on the left side of the building.
All the listed buildings on the east side of Castle Street form a group.
