Description

The stable block located to the south-east (right hand) of Castle Hill House dates from the 18th century. It is a single storey building with an attic and features an old tile half-hipped roof. The front is made of fine brick with toothed brick eaves. There is a projecting pedimented bay to the right of the centre, which has a circular rubbed brick lunette with a small loaded window in the reveals.

On the ground floor, there is a round-headed doorway with rubbed brick voussoirs, flanked by tall round-headed lights. Above the doorway is a semi-circular fanlight with radiating tracery, leading to a half-glazed door. Originally, there were similar doorways on both the right and left sides, but now only a three-panelled door remains on the left. To the left of this door, there is a segmental-headed transomed and mullioned casement with leaded lights, and a segmental-headed modern casement above it. Further left, there is a doorway with a loft door above.

The building also includes a single storey structure with a hipped tile roof and a modern garage door at the west end on the ground floor. The stable block is listed due to its fine brickwork and its group value with Castle Hill House, the stable yard wall, and other buildings to the south-west. All the listed buildings on Castle Street (East Side) form a cohesive group.
