Description

No. 61 Castle Street is a late 18th-century building featuring two storeys and a basement. It is constructed of finely jointed red brick set on a projecting plinth. There is a painted string course at ground floor window head level, which is interrupted on either side of each window. Each window has a 5-centred rubbed brick arch above it, and the windows are set in slight recesses. A string course runs above the first-floor windows, and the wall rises to a parapet with a stucco coping. The building has an old tiled roof.

On the first floor, there are five windows, with the central window being arched and featuring painted springers and a keystone. The ground floor includes two large windows, each four panes wide, set within elliptical recesses, along with two basement lights below. All windows are topped with rubbed brick arches.

The central entrance features a six-panel door with a scroll brass knocker, housed in an elaborate wooden doorcase. This doorcase has panelled reveals flanked by quadrant Greek Doric columns, with a moulded doorhead that curves over the reveals and angles over the columns. Above the door is an arched fanlight with a radiating and curved pattern, divided by small circles, all set in a panelled reveal with reeded edging. The outer casing includes panelled pilasters, a broken entablature with roundel ornamentation on the frieze, and an open pediment.

To the right of the main building, there is a one-storey garage that links to the adjoining house. The central bay of the building has a slight projection, and there are two moulded stone steps leading up to the entrance, along with a foot-scraper to the left. All the listed buildings on the east side of Castle Street form a group.
