Description
The Windsor Almshouses, dated 1619, are a notable building located on Castle Street. This long, symmetrical structure features two storeys and five gables, constructed from brick with an old tile roof that has been partly relaid with new tiles. The central gable is crow-stepped and includes a square stone panel inscribed with the date and the name Andrew Windsor, who established the building for "8 poor, honest old impotent persons."
The other gables display 19th-century cut bargeboards with central pointed finials and have small panel casements with two lights. On the ground floor, there are eight ledged doors with cover strips that are studded and form flat pointed arches at the top, all of which are early 19th-century but set in older chamfered frames. The central gable features a large double door similar in style. The doors are arranged in pairs, with single doors at the corners. Between the doors, there are ranges of two-light casements in chamfered wood frames, complete with drip moulds. Each door is accessed by a small flight of brick steps with wooden edging on the treads, and there are 19th-century pediment hoods above each door. The building is topped with four tall chimney stacks.
In front of the almshouses, three tall plane trees at the pavement edge contribute significantly to the streetscape. The Windsor Almshouses, along with the wall behind them, and the other listed buildings on Castle Street (East Side), including Nos 3 and 5 and Sherfield's Yard in Park Row, form an important group.
