Description
The lamp post opposite No. 3 Park Row in Farnham is a late-19th century gas street lamp that has been converted to electricity. It features a fluted tapering shaft made of painted cast iron, supporting a simple quadrangular lantern constructed from metal and glass. The lantern is held up by four swan-neck metal supports and is topped with a crown crested finial. The shaft bears the foundry mark 'Herring & Son Ltd, Chertsey'.
Modern street lighting began with gas lamps in Pall Mall, London, in 1816, and by 1840, gas lighting was widespread in London and other large towns. Electric lighting was introduced later, with the first installation in London occurring in 1879. This lamp post is of a type that was commonly installed in Farnham during the late 19th century. Herring & Son Ltd, the foundry that made this lamp post, was in operation from the early 19th century until 1982.
The lamp post is listed for its architectural interest as a good example of a 19th-century gas lamp post and for its group value with other listed lamp posts in Castle Hill and Castle Street, which share a similar design and date.
