Description

47 and 48 Castle Street comprise a late 18th-century front applied to an earlier timber-framed building. The two-storey and attic structure has a brick facade on a stucco plinth, with a string course at first-floor level and brick dentilled eaves. The roof is covered in old tiles, and a substantial square chimney with a double offset head is prominent. There are two dormers, and small sash windows are present.

Number 47 features two three-light windows on the first floor, and a single three-light window on the ground floor with a red-rubbed brick arch. A late 18th-century half-glazed door, with nine panes and flush bottom panels, is set under a flat hood supported by cut brackets.

Number 48 has a single window on each floor, and a five-panel door with a half-moon shaped glazed panel above, within an architrave surround. The door is topped by an open moulded pediment hood supported by cut scroll brackets, with a bed mould carried round. A brass scroll pattern knocker is affixed to the door.

The buildings form part of a group of listed buildings along the east side of Castle Street.
