Description
Nos 39, 40, and 41 Castle Street are two three-storey blocks built in 1866 by F C Birch, with Nos 39 and 40 constructed slightly earlier. The buildings are made of yellow brick, which has been painted over on Nos 40 and 41, and feature slate roofs. They include stringcourses and quoins on Nos 39 and 40. The windows and doors have plain stone surrounds, also painted on Nos 40 and 41, with arched doorways and slightly arched windows on the ground and first floors. Small cast iron flower guards adorn the first-floor windows. While the buildings have a harsh appearance, they hold significant group value with other listed buildings, including Nos 1 to 9 Lowndes Buildings, located on the west side of Castle Street.
