Description

The Coal Tax Post, located 100 yards south of The Sportsman Public House, dates from around 1850 and stands approximately 3.5 feet high. It features a metal, four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a shield of the City of London Corporation, along with lettering on the pier that reads: "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where tax was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating as far back as the 1660s.
