Description
This is a pair of cottages, built in the early 19th century. They are located on Portsmouth Road in Guildford. The cottages are constructed with colourwashed brick on a rendered plinth, and have low-pitched, hipped slate roofs. They are two storeys high, with a basement, and feature projecting end sections with stacks at each end. The windows are tripartite glazing-bar sashes; each end section has one window on each floor, with the windows on the right-hand side (number 71) having lower glazing bars removed. The central part of the first floor has one 12-pane glazing-bar sash window on each side. There is an additional plate glass sash window in the re-entrant angle to the right. Glazed doors are positioned on either side of a centrally placed, segmentally-headed niche with a reeded surround. A portico, supported by four Doric columns on pedestals and topped with a flat roof, provides access via a flight of steps. The cottages are included on the list for their contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
