Description

The Court is a communal house block dating to 1902, designed by H. Thackery Turner. It is constructed of red-brown brick to the lower part, with colourwashed render above a tiled drip course. The building has steeply pitched, plain-tiled roofs. The overall plan is in a "half-H" shape, with the end wings being splayed outwards. It is two storeys in height with attic space accommodated within large gabled dormers. The building features prominent cross-ridge stacks – three to each end wing and eight paired stacks on the front and rear pitches of the central range, all with brick-dentilled, corbelled tops. Pier buttresses are positioned on the inner sides of the wings, and deep eaves extend throughout. The windows are wood-framed casements with moulded architrave surrounds that butt into the roof on the jambs. The south wing has three 3-light gabled dormers and one 2-light dormer, the north wing has five 3-light and one 2-light dormers, and the main range has eight 3-light dormers arranged in pairs. The south wing has three 4-light windows and two other windows on the first floor; the north wing has five 4-light windows and one 2-light window; and the main range has eight 4-light windows. The ground floor features panelled doors set within porch recesses, which have segmental heads and three sets of paired half-glazed doors across the main range, with single doors in the angles. The wings have single 6-panel doors. A small gabled porch is located on the end of the north wing, with steps leading up to the original fittings of the door. The Court is one of several buildings by Turner in the local area.
