Description

SANDFORD ST.MARTIN LEDWELL SP42NW 6/127 Outbuildings and attached wall and steps approx. 40m. N of Upper Close

GV II

Coach house now outbuildings. Early C18. Marlstone ashlar; Welsh-slate roofs. Single range. 2 storeys. Right section, with plinth and eaves band, has an arcade of 4 segmental-arched entrances, now infilled with later walling and openings. Range originally continued to right. To left, a lower section has a similar plinth but has been reduced in height. It has a narrow doorway and 2 wider entrances separated by a circular stone pier. A second narrow doorway to extreme left retains a segmental arch. The rear wall has a continuous band and there are 3 segmental-arched windows to rear of the higher range, 2 now blocked. Interior not inspected. The wall extends westwards as a retaining wall alongside the lane and terminates with a flight of stone steps. Probably one of the buildings of Ledwell Park, rebuilt early C18 for the Earl of Deloraine and demolished c.1800. (V.C.H.: Oxfordshire, Vol.XI, p.173).
