Description

The Steps is a small house, likely dating to the 16th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with wooden lintels and has a thatched roof with a brick stack at the ridge. The original plan was probably three rooms, potentially evolving from a two-unit hall house. The house has one storey and an attic. The front elevation features a doorway with a thatched canopy on the left side. A blocked doorway is positioned to the right, flanked by large 20th-century casement windows. Two small, two-light leaded dormers are visible in the roof, one retaining an early timber frame. The rear of the house has additional leaded casement windows, and the stack is located to the left of centre.

Inside, to the right of the stack, the house retains two stop-chamfered transverse beams with stop-chamfered joists in the two bays. The fireplace bay has later joists likely inserted at a later date. The stack may rise from the centre of what was originally an open hall.
