Description
Upper Close is a house built in the early 18th century, with a 20th-century extension. It is constructed of marlstone ashlar and some limestone rubble, topped with a concrete plain-tile roof and rebuilt stacks. The house has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys plus an attic. The original section features a four-window ashlar front with a plinth, a storey band, and segmental arches at the ground floor. The doorway, located to the right of centre, is accessed by a flight of stone steps, and the three ground-floor windows have tall cross casements with leaded lights. The window above the doorway is blocked, while the remaining windows have two-light leaded casements. The 20th-century extensions are on the right side. The rear wall, made of rubble, has been altered but still shows some segmental arches and one leaded casement. There are roof dormers on the rear side. Inside, there is a large open fireplace with a timber bressumer, and the rear of the window frames features ogee moulding. This house is likely part of Ledwell Park, which was rebuilt in the early 18th century for the Earl of Deloraine and was demolished around 1800.
