Description

No. 23 West St Helen Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It likely dates from the late 16th century but has been altered and extended in the late 18th to early 19th centuries and again in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame with rendered and colourwashed brick infill, topped by a plain-tile roof with brick ridges and lateral stacks. It stands two storeys high and has a two-window range of 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor includes two 20th-century shop windows, a central glazed door, and a four-panel door to the right. At the rear, there are two later timber-framed wings, one of which has a tripartite sash window and a fragment of visible framing. The interior is reported to retain timber framing in two bays of the original front range, including jowled posts, tie-beam trusses with arched braces, and curved wind braces, along with some original purlins and rafters.
