Description
No. 28 Chestergate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with an early 19th-century frontage. The building is timber-framed and has a brick front with a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has a two-window range. On the right side, there is an early 19th-century shallow bow window featuring small panes and a moulded cornice. The left side of the building has been altered to create a passage, with the entrance now located in the side elevation. The upper windows are sashes with flat-arched brick heads and stone sills. Inside, the original layout seems to have been a two-unit plan with a rear wing and a staircase positioned to one side, connecting the front and back rooms. The original staircase remains intact, showcasing splat balusters and carved newel posts, along with visible chamfered ceiling beams and square panelled wall framing.
