Description

Nos. 40 and 42 on Ock Street are a pair of buildings that were rebuilt in the late 19th century, designed in a "half timbered" style similar to No. 38 nearby. The rear of the buildings suggests they may have an earlier core dating back to the 18th century or earlier. The exterior is roughly rendered and consists of three storeys.

There are three slightly projecting double sash windows supported by three carved brackets, topped by a small dentil cornice. A smaller window is located in the gable end. Between the ground and first floor, above the public house windows, there is a dentil cornice and frieze. The right-hand door features six panels and is set within a pilastered architrave with a pediment. The building has a rendered plinth, and the left-hand door is six fielded panels with a rectangular four-light fanlight in a moulded architrave, also with a dentil cornice. The eaves have a modillion cornice and tile barge-boarding. At the rear, the building is constructed of brick with an old tile roof and has two storeys.

Nos. 34 to 42 form a group.
