Description

The war memorial in Steeple Aston was designed in 1920 by F E Howard and was carved and erected in 1921 by Messrs Booth of Banbury. It is constructed from rubble stone and ashlar. The memorial features a cross that stands on an octagonal rubble stone base with a chamfered plinth. The three upper steps are inscribed with the names of those who died in both World Wars. An octagonal stone base supports an octagonal broached cross shaft, which is topped with a carved Gothic style cross adorned with foliate decoration. The memorial was dedicated during a service on July 31st, 1921, led by the Venerable Archdeacon Archer-Houblon, and was unveiled by Lord Valentia.
