Description

The Cassington War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1919, designed by F E Howard and constructed by W H Axtell and Son, monumental masons. Sculptures were created by Alec Miller, and names of those who fell in the Second World War were later added. The memorial was restored in 2018.

Made from Ketton and Bath stones, the memorial is situated on a grassed area on the east side of The Green, south of the Old Vicarage. It features a crucifix set on a tapering octagonal shaft, which transitions from a square to an octagonal plinth, and has a three-tiered octagonal base. The crucifix has floriated intersections between the upright and crossbars. The front face displays a sculpture of Christ Crucified, while the rear features a sculpture of the Madonna and Child, both in full relief.

The plinth includes inserted stone panels with incised inscriptions in a Gothic script. The front panel lists the date 1939-1945, followed by the names of three fallen soldiers and the inscription "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY." The rear panel shows the date 1914-1918, followed by the names of the fallen and the inscription "TO THE GALLANT DEAD." The side panels contain additional names, bringing the total to 16 First World War dead.

Surrounding the base of the memorial are a pair of narrow, stone-edged flower beds enclosed by a metal post and chain fence.
