Description
Chestnut House is an 18th-century house located on Paines Hill in Steeple Aston. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring limestone-ashlar dressings and limestone rubble, topped with a concrete plain-tile roof and brick gable stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan with an added outshut and stands two storeys plus an attic.
The front facade is a regular three-window arrangement, with an ashlar plinth, a storey band, rusticated quoins, and a moulded cornice. The windows consist of 12-pane sashes with flush ashlar architraves, and there is a central six-panel door with a blocked rectangular overlight, topped by a panelled flat canopy supported by scroll brackets. A plaque for "Farmers Fire and Life" insurance is set below the cornice. The roof features stone gable parapets with projecting kneelers, while the sides, rear, and lower rear wing are constructed in rubble.
Inside, the house boasts a large inglenook fireplace and panelled shutters.
