Description

Chancel Cottage is an 18th-century house located on Fir Lane in Steeple Aston. It is built of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings, limestone rubble, and has a Stonesfield-slate roof covered with concrete plain tiles. The building is in an L-shaped plan, with a symmetrical two-window front. The front features a central four-panel door sheltered by a flat stone canopy. The windows are renewed two-light casements set below stone lintels. The side and rear walls are constructed of rubble, with a lower rear wing returning to the left, partly converted from a former stable. Internally, a wide inglenook fireplace is present; there is also a quarter-turn staircase with winders. Original 18th-century panelled shutters and cupboards remain, as do butt-purlin roofs. The building is included on the listing for its group value.
