Description
Cuttle Mill is a watermill and millhouse, now functioning as a house, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It was altered around 1738 by William Kent. The building is constructed from coursed squared marlstone with wooden lintels and features a Stonesfield-slate roof with stone and brick stacks. It has a three-unit plan plus the mill in a single range, with a short added wing in Gothick style.
The structure is two storeys high and has a four-window front on the main range. The entrance is located in the second bay, flanked by three-light casements. The first floor features casements with arrangements of 2, 2, 3, and 2 lights. The fourth bay has a second inserted entrance and a two-light casement next to the projecting wing. The range extends slightly beyond the wing, showcasing a tall opening that has been converted into a window.
The wing has a stepped gable adorned with crocketed corner pinnacles and two intermediate re-set pinnacles. It contains a quatrefoil window above a tall ogee-headed window, which is situated above a rebuilt stone stair. The rubble flying buttresses flanking the gable wall are now topped by large rubble pinnacles, which originally supported the two crocketed pinnacles re-set on the gable. The roof of the main range features a brick stack on the left gable and a large central stone stack.
Inside, there is an open fireplace and a stop-chamfered beam. Kent re-modelled the mill to create "The Temple of the Mill," which is a prominent feature in the principal view from Rousham Park. This makes it one of the earliest examples of a picturesque eyecatcher. Rousham Park is listed in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade I.
